On 26 April 2018, Merak officially opened a new branch in the region of Belgische Meer, near the border with the Netherlands. In this way it increases its storage capacity, both for customers in northern Belgian and in the south of the Netherlands.

With a storage capacity of 30,000 tonnes, of which 6,000 tonnes are already being used, the Meer site is expanding Merak's total capacity to 1,500 kilometres of running archive, bringing together roughly 20 million A4 folders. The strategic location also makes the establishment very suitable for the storage of archives of northern Belgian and southern Dutch companies.

“We chose Meer very consciously, because it is on the Belgian-Dutch border,” says Nicolas Uyttenhove, Sales & Marketing Manager. “Meer is a perfect location to serve our Southern Dutch customers, while Northern Dutch customers can already go to Amsterdam.”

Ready for the future

Just as in Schelle, where Merak settled in 2011, Merak did its utmost to make the branch in Meer fully ready for the future. Both in terms of safety and the environment. Uyttenhove: “The state-of-the-art sprinkler system is fully compliant with the strictest fire safety guidelines of the NFPA. Intelligent LEDs automatically illuminate the rooms based on presence. The climate is controlled by a heat pump, which we aim to run entirely on solar energy in the course of next year. Fixed charging points are also provided for our electric vehicles. We use the most advanced techniques to monitor the building, of which for obvious reasons we do not disclose any additional details. There is no change in the way we work. In Meer, Merak will have the same quality, reliable checks and procedures requirements as in all our other facilities, including intrusion, camera detection, data loggers and continuous monitoring."

Expanding the range of services

Merak will also expand its service in Meer in the future. “Amongst other things, there will be a scanning department, equivalent to that in Schelle. In addition, we reserve an entire hall to our new ‘box@ home’ service for the storage of goods and products for businesses and individuals. That happens in a separate room, without direct contact with the archives. In this way, Meer is the perfect complement to our current branches in Vilvoorde, Mechelen, Schelle and Amsterdam, not only in terms of regional distribution, but also in terms of services," concludes Uyttenhove.
